Creigiau Recreation Ground

Recreation for everyone in the heart of Creigiau

Creigiau Pétanque Club

Pétanque is a form of boules where the goal is to throw hollow metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (literally "piglet") or jack, while standing inside a circle with both feet on the ground. The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel. It can be played in public areas in parks, or in dedicated facilities called boulodromes. Similar games are bocce, bowls and (adapted to ice) curling.

Creigiau Pétanque Club plays on the gravel pétanque piste in recreation field close to the tennis courts. We are a small mixed age-group of friendly, people that play the game for enjoyment and its social aspect, though some members do play to quite high competitive and even international levels!

We started life as a club in 1996 playing out of the Creigiau Inn, however the club outgrew its facilities there and moved to the rec. a few years later. We play in the Welsh Pétanque Association (WPA) league and in the season, Creigiau teams can be seen playing away matches around the Cardiff area. We currently run two sides within the league both in the second division where the competition is fairly fierce, but very friendly!

The league season extends between early April and mid-September and fixtures are usually played on a Wednesday evening. We also run a club night on a Wednesday evening too where anyone who wishes to have a game (even borrow some boules for the night too!) will be made welcome. Usually the players who aren’t playing for a club team that night usually come along just to keep their hand in. It’s often used by the members as an excuse to have a nice, cool drink on a warm, summer evening!

To play, you need little special equipment, save for your boules. To get you started, we have the facilities to loan you these so you can get a very good idea as to whether you’ll enjoy the game before you fully commit to the expense of buying a set of boules which cost anywhere between £30 to £60 for a set suitable for a new player. The only other cost, should you wish to join the club, would be a WPA association fee of £15 – this buys you an annual insurance cover, (you are throwing lumps of metal around, remember!) and if you wish to play league matches, we will ask you for a £2.50 match fee which covers the club’s operational expenses. Any other practice games you play are, of course, free!

If this sounds like a gentle sport that you might enjoy, why not come along and meet us? We don’t bite, honest!

We’d love to hear from some younger people too so don’t worry if you’re young. The WPA has a great development programme that you could follow. Who knows? In a few years time, you could be representing Wales against other international sides so go ahead and give us a shout!!
